ITU was founded by Michael McTeigue and Jonathan Graves in 2003 to meet the continuing education needs of several industrial trades in Oregon. Mr. McTeigue has owned his own fabrication and boiler installation business for over 15 years, with an additional 20 years in the boilermaker, plumbing, electrical, welding, and metal fabrication industries. Mr. Graves has over 20 years in the piping, mechanical, civil, heavy civil, design and construction management industries, and has built and remodeled a number of homes, along with having bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and is affiliated with ASME and ASHRAE. 4. How does ITU differ from other types of continuing education, including distance learning?
At ITU we want to provide you with another option - or tool - to complete your continuing education requirements with the State. In doing so, we have come up with a way for you to complete your CE requirement in a way that is easy and convenient and cost effective for you. In addition, as we provide this service to you, we in turn want to hear from you so that we can make our services even better. In short we want this to be a great experience.

5. How do I register to use ITU course materials?
The first step is to create an user account. You can create an account by going to the First Time User Registration form. Once you have created a user account, you may participate in the Community Center discussions. To take a course, use the Course Listing section to purchase the desired courses.

Top

6. Where are the course materials?
ITU currently offers the course materials from Boilermaker and Plumber courses. To find what courses are available at this time, view the complete course list. Once you have accessed a particular course site, the right-hand navigation bar of each course homepage will detail what materials are available for that individual course.

You may click on the Course Listing that is listed in the top bar navigation of every page on the ITU Web site. This will allow you to view the list of every available course, grouped into the trade departments.

Top

7. How are the courses organized on ITU's site?
At ITU, departments and other trade disciplines are commonly referred to as "courses" and are named by their corresponding numbers in those trade disciples. That is why you will see numerical references throughout the ITU course sites for course offerings. (For instance, "Boilermaker: Course 4", or "Plumbing: Course 2".)

Top

8. How can I use ITU course materials?
ITU course materials may be used for the purpose of completing the purchased courses. Their contents may not be copied, distributed, translated and/or re-sold except by explicit, written permission of ITU.

Top

9. What are the prerequisites to use ITU materials?
Currently the only prerequisite to taking an ITU course is to first register through our site, and then to select and purchase the course through our online shopping cart process. Once you have completed these two items, you may access the course material immediately and complete your continuing education.

Top

10. How long do I have to finish the course online?
You have from the time you start reading the course material to midnight June 30 (in the current year) to finish.

By "finish" we mean that you have read through the material and successfully passed all the quizzes and the final exam by 11:59 P.M., June 30.

Top

11. I forgot my user name, how do I find out what it is?
Just click on the link on the home page (that's the first web page that you see when you came to the ITU website) entitled "I forgot my username." You will then need to verify some of your information, and then ITU will E-mail you your username to the E-mail address you used during your registration.

Top

12. I forgot my password, how do I find out what it is?
We do not keep track of anyone's password. You will have to create a new password. Just click on the link on the home page entitled "I forgot my password." You will then need to verify some of your information, and then you will reset your password.

Top

13. Why can't I review any material before I finish the previous quiz?
The way the courses are set up you must read through the material, then pass the quiz for that material before you can move on to the next section. This will also help you to keep track what you have done so you can pick up where you left off.

Top

14. How many times can I take a quiz or final test?
In order to move on to the next section you must get 4 out of 5 questions correctly. Once you pass a quiz you can retake it as many times as you want, and you can even go to a previous section and retake any previous quiz. Once you pass the final test (you must get at least 20 out of 25), you can retake the final exam until you log out. After you log out, you are not able to access the course again

Top

15. Does ITU offer discounts on textbooks or software applications used in the course materials?
At this time ITU does not offer any discounts for books or other materials. However, ITU will have available to anyone who registers through our site access to discounted books and materials using our online shopping cart. This will also include the latest codebooks and industry standards.

Top

16. Does ITU offer any users access to discussion groups or to ask questions around its educational content?
Yes, ITU offers a Community Forum, which includes forums for students to discuss their educational goals and course contents.

Top

17. Can I link to the ITU Web site from my Web site?
Links to the ITU Web site are permitted so long as the use of the materials associated with the link is permitted under the terms of use; and the link is freely accessible (e.g., no restrictions or fee for access); and there is no claim, appearance, or implication of an affiliation with or endorsement by ITU. ITU cannot guarantee the persistence of any specific link other than those to the ITU homepage.

Top

18. How can I purchase a course?
See question #7 above, "What are the prerequisites to taking an ITU course?".

Top

19. Is it safe to use my credit card online?
ITU has taken measures to protect your purchasing information. First, our site has an SSL certificate which is use by protected Web sites to encrypt any personal information. When you see a locked padlock icon in the far lower right hand corner of your computer screen that means that Web page and any information you enter into that Web page is encrypted.

In addition, our Web site never stores or keeps any of your credit card or debit card information. Period. No ITU personnel or any agents acting (such as analyzing survey information about our site) on behalf of ITU will ever have any access to any of your purchasing information now or in the future. It you still have more questions regarding this matter, please contact us at support@itued.com and we will answer your questions.

Top

20. What is your refund policy?
ITU students who complete a terms-of-use agreement and purchase an online course may cancel within three business days after the date of enrollment. Students must provide notification in writing of cancellation to ITU at admin@itued.com. Such refunds will be made within 30 days after cancellation.

21. Who owns the intellectual property published on the ITU Web site?
Prior to making any course materials publicly available, the ITU team has reviewed all material extensively to determine the correct ownership of the material and obtain the appropriate licenses to make the material openly available on the Web. We will promptly remove any material that is determined to be infringing on the rights of others.

If you believe that a portion of ITU materials infringes another's copyright, please notify ITU by email. The intellectual property policies created for ITU are clear and consistent with other policies for scholarly materials used in education. ITU retains ownership of materials prepared for ITU, following the ITU policy on textbook authorship. If student course work is placed on the ITU site, then copyright in the work remains with the student.

Top

22. What are the requirements of use for ITU users?
The underlying premise and purpose of ITU is to make course materials used in training of professionals in the commercial and industrial trades within Oregon available on the Web. As this purpose comes at considerable expense, ITU holds understandable expectations and asserts that the course materials developed by ITU are the explicit copyright of ITU.

Please refer to the ITU Legal Notices page for our specific licensing terms and conditions. If you would like to purchase a copy of ITU course materials, please contact Jonathan Graves, the ITU Vice President of Operations, for clarification.

Top

23. How do I contact a specific member of the ITU Faculty?
Inquiries related to specific course materials will be forwarded to the ITU faculty member associated with that course for their consideration. However, due to the tremendous volume of email inquiries received, it is unlikely he or she will answer all emails directly, but a response on their behalf will be made.

Top

24. Will inquiries to ITU be answered?
ITU encourages users to provide feedback on the site and on the course materials. The comments and constructive criticism of users will help the ITU staff improve the site and course materials as we continue to provide the best service possible.

Top

25. Will ITU have any of the course material translated into any other languages?
Currently ITU does not have immediate plans to translate our course material into other languages. However, we do plan to provide courses in our languages in the future. If you or someone else you know could benefit from the course work in another language please contact us at support@itued.com with the information and we will try to accommodate your request.

Top

26. What are the technical requirements for viewing ITU course materials?
ITU course sites work on both the Macintosh and Windows platforms. Although higher-speed connections are preferable, slower connections, such as 28K modems, should allow users to view most materials on the sites. However, downloading materials may take somewhat longer. ITU has tested the course sites with Netscape version 4.75 and Internet Explorer version 5.5 browsers.

Top

27. How do I change the font-size on the ITU Web site?
The fonts and style of the ITU Web site have been specifically selected to meet certain design and accessibility standards. The ITU Team has tested the site and these standards across a wide variety of browsers and platforms. However, some users may still find that their browser configurations continue to display the text too small. You can change the displayed font size using your browser's "View" menu. In Netscape 7, there is a "VIEW - Text-Zoom" selection (try 120%). In Netscape 4.x, there is a "VIEW - Increase Font" selection. In Internet Explorer, you can select "VIEW - Text-Size - Larger or Largest." We hope this helps you to more comfortably view the ITU course materials.

28. What information does ITU collect from visitors to the Web site?
The information we learn from visitors helps us improve the ITU site, and assists us in the evaluation of usage, access, and impact of ITU on the online educational community. ITU collects the following information from visitors:

  • Information You Provide: We receive and store any information you enter on our Web site or give us in any other way. You provide most such information when you submit feedback on the site, contact us by email, or agree to participate in a visitor survey. This information may include your name and email address, your trade discipline, your institution, your geographic region, how you are using ITU, and what you think of ITU. In all cases, any information you provide is strictly optional and voluntary and you may choose to use the ITU site without ever providing this information. If you voluntarily provide your email address or other contact information, we will not share personal information with anyone without first requesting your explicit permission to do so. The only exception to this is information required by the state of Oregon for reporting who has successfully completed their continuing education. In this specific case, only your name, address, SSN, and course information and the date the CE was completed are sent to the State, as this information is required by law. Any additional information will be included only if the State law requires it.
  • Automatic Information: We receive and store certain types of information whenever you interact with the ITU Web site. Like many Web sites, we make use of "cookies," and we obtain certain types of information when your Web browser accesses http://www.itued.com. Examples of the information we collect and analyze include the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the ITU site; computer and connection information such as browser type and version, operating system, and platform, and; content you viewed or searched for during your visit to ITU. During some visits we may use software tools to measure and collect session information, including page response times, download errors, and length of visits to certain pages. However, none of this information is personally identifiable or linked back to you individually.
  • Email Communications: We maintain a list of interested visitors who voluntarily provide their email addresses and to whom we email the monthly "ITU Update" email newsletter, and other infrequent email announcements pertaining to ITU. If you no longer want to receive the newsletter, or any other communications from ITU, send an email to unsubscribe@itued.com and we will remove you from our email contact database. To re-subscribe just send an email to subscribe@itued.com.

29. What are "cookies," and does ITU make use of cookies on its Web site?
Cookies are alphanumeric identifiers that this Web site transfers to your computer's hard drive through your Web browser to enable our systems to recognize your browser when you make return trips to the site. This allows us to track your use of the site (anonymously), and to analyze patterns in site use, such as repeat visits, length of visits, and breadth of content used, for example). Cookies also allow us to conduct periodic, online, voluntary user surveys where we can gain more insight into what type of people are actually using the site, how they are using the site, and what the educational impact of the site is on these users.

ITU's use of cookies is designed to be unobtrusive, and we do not collect personally identifiable information through their use. However, if you do not wish to accept cookies, the "Help" portion of the toolbar on most Web browsers will tell you how to prevent your browser from accepting new cookies, how to have the browser notify you when you receive a new cookie, or how to disable cookies altogether. If you leave cookies enabled on your Web browser, you may be asked to complete a brief questionnaire that will help us gain a better understanding of the use and impact of ITU.

30. Does ITU share the information it receives?
Information about our site visitors is an important part of understanding and extending the impact of ITU in the worldwide academic community. Individual personally identifiable information about users (name, email address, etc.) will not be made available to third parties except to companies and individuals who perform functions on our behalf, and then only to improve the ease of use with our site. Examples include compiling and categorizing user feedback, analyzing survey data or data about your use of the site, and providing customer support.

These agents have access only to user information needed to perform their ITU functions, but may not use this information for any other purposes. These agents are bound by non-disclosure agreements, and no personal information of any kind will be given or sold to other parties for any reason. In addition, State law requires ITU to report certain information to the State directly. This information (name, address, SSN, course title, date completed, credit hours completed) will be sent to the State only upon successful completion of a State-certified ITU continuing education course. Any requests by the State for any additional information will require your written permission before ITU would release it.

31. Why does this PDF not open correctly in my Acrobat 4.0/Acrobat 5.0 Reader?
A small percentage of the PDF documents offered on the ITU Web site are compatible only with Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Reader. If you would like to view such a file, we recommend downloading the Acrobat Reader 6.0 from the Adobe Web site at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/main.html. Meanwhile, we are currently working to identify these files and optimize them to fully function with Acrobat Reader versions 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0. Please contact us at support@itued.com if should you notice a file that has this issue when attempting to view and we will work to fix it. In your message, be sure to include your version number of Adobe Acrobat, your browser type and version as well as what operating system you are using. Also, if you would identify the course, section and name of the PDF that would assist us in locating and correcting it.
